Reflections of an Osage Poet

Our speaker Duane BigEagle will read and illuminate his poetry linking his Osage, Native American ancestral wisdom with his experiences with Western culture. He is co-creating the worship with Karen Elliott and George Beeler.

Work by Duane BigEagle has appeared in chapbooks, magazines, newspapers, and anthologies including The Nation, Chicago Review, Beloit Poetry Review, and dozens more. Duane has read his poetry for events at The Oakland Museum, San Jose Poetry Center, Stanford, University of Oklahoma, San Francisco Art Institute, Sonoma State University, Cody’s Bookstore, and others. Duane is also a painter, and some of his work will be on display in the Fellowship Hall after worship.

Duane grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in English. He founded the Northern California Osage Association in 1996 with UUP member Karen Elliott. He has been a poet-teacher with the California Poets In The Schools Program since 1974, serving on its Board and as Board President. He is currently a Lecturer in Native American Studies at the College of Marin and previously at San Francisco State University, World College West, and Sonoma State University. His rich life experience includes being a radio producer and editor, founder and editor of a literary small press, and consultant to the Annenburg Institute for School Reform at Brown University.
